What is W3C? and why is it important?
W3C is an acronym for World Wide Web Consortium.
This is an organization (as old as the world wide web itself W3C history)
of vendor neutral world wide web / programming experts who work collectively with all parties interested in the
internet/world wide web and its methods of communication. The standards they set are not proprietary and can be accessed,
used, shared, and improved, free of charge. If these standards are followed by web programmers, their web pages
can viewed on virtually any browser in a consistent manner, without the requirement of expensive restrictive
software like some of that produced by large software companies in the U.S. .
Society has a battle going on now similiar to the one that existed when books first became available by virtue of the printing press. Now - and then; power hungry people attempt, and did attempt, to control the new technology that brought enlightenment to the average citizen. The W3C is part of a general ethical tendency toward the idea that knowledge should be available to all persons. The internet / WWW is like the modern day public library; and it must be open to all. The W3C standards, when followed, allow this modern-day library to be accessed by the largest possible number of people. back to wesite design and usability issues
